Common materials used to construct a wood fence are pressure-treated and cedar lumber. Both materials have pros and cons depending on the application. To have a better understanding and get sense of confidence in the product, please see below for details.
Pressure Treated The preservatives in ACQ products are frequently used in other things that are common in our every day lives. Copper, a naturally occurring mineral and the main ingredient in ACQ, is an effective and widely used fungicide. Quaternary compounds are commonly used in household disinfectants and cleaners and provide enhanced performance against copper-tolerant fungi and insects. The preservative penetrates deeply into the wood and will remain for long periods of time. Pros - long-term protection from rot, fungal decay and insect attack
- Costs less than cedar
- wood scraps can be disposed of in ordinary rubbish collection
- Readily available most lumber yards
- Posts usually lasts longer
Cons - Relies on a chemical compound for protection
- Can only be stained when completely dry
- May shrink
- Material may warp, check or split
Western Red Cedar Western Red Cedar provides quality, appearance and longevity. The natural oils in this product help the wood resist decay and insect attack, increasing its durability without the use of chemical treatments. Cedar fencing is dimensionally more stable than other woods so there is minimal shrinkage. A cedar fence will stay both straight and sturdy. Pros - long-term protection from rot, fungal decay and insect attack
- Has less chance of warping and cracking
- Lighter weight
- Readily available most lumber yards
Cons - Cedar is a soft lumber
- Posts will decay quicker
- Cost is higher than pressure treated

Click photo for more... | The team at ASAP Fence were great to deal with for the installation of our fence and gates.
The pricing was very competitive to the other quotes we received and the product delivered has far exceeded our expectations.
The staff are very responsive, and a pleasure to talk with. They were able to discuss potential issues and showed their knowledge, where other contractors simply said "it will be fine" over the telephone.
This is exactly the type of company I want to deal with, and will highly recommend them to neighbours, friends, family, and anyone else who is looking to do any fence work.
Thank you again to Neil and team for their outstanding work! |
